Carolyn Caldwell Obituary

Carolyn Lee (East) Caldwell passed away on June 29, 2023. She was 80-years-old. She was born on October 14, 1942 in Christiansburg VA and had lived in Virginia until moving to Albany, Georgia in 1976. During her working career she has held positions in a bank and as the Health Dept. Office Manager in Williamsburg, VA. In Georgia she spent her career as a Legal Secretary from which she retired as well as holding positions at Turner Job Corps, Darton College among other local businesses.

Carolyn was a single mother and a strong, independent woman and lived by her own terms for as long as possible. She loved basketball and had played on her high school team and could be found watching it for hours. She loved her cats as though they were her children. She collected many knick-knacks throughout the years and had a large collection of beach shells. We all thought of her as the family’s “Go-To-Doc" which is one of Heather’s (granddaughter) fondest memories of her as she was always able to answer what might be wrong or what “medicine” to use. She was mother, protector, and provider when her children were young, and she loved all as well as her grand- and great-grandchildren. To her children she was “Mama;” to her grands- and great-grands- she was “Gannyma.”

She is preceded in death by her parents: Eugene H. and Juanita L. East, her brother Ronald (Ronnie) East, and her nephew Eric East, all from Salem/Roanoke VA. Carolyn is survived by her children: Robin (Caldwell) Purvis, Melody (Caldwell) Strauss, Candace Caldwell, and Myracle (Caldwell) Stuckey. Her grandchildren: Shannon Jordan, Heather Dupree (husband JD Dupree), Cody Purvis, Easton Bryant, Barron Stuckey and Rowan Kirkland; her great-grandchildren: Thomas, Devon, Levi, Wendi, Chloe, Braylee, Bently, Carissa, and Bryson; and one great-great-grandson Sebastian. We have great appreciation for Megan Temples who is loved as a member of this family and for the kind and considerate care she has shown and given to our mother. Thanks for all that you've done! Scott East (nephew-VA), Tammy Lea Patton (niece-VA), and Elwood Mills (cousin-Arizona); Phyllis Alderman (childhood friend-VA), Kansas Kimsey (friend and the daughter of a good friend Wanda Kimsey-GA), and Sandra Davis (longtime friend-GA).

She will be greatly missed by many and always remembered and cherished by each individual's memories of her!

The family is so grateful for all the many acts of kindness and words of encouragement during this difficult time.  In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the dementia and/or leukemia association.   Please continue to keep them lifted up in prayer as their hearts search for the comfort that only Christ can give.
